Facts on 900 Services
Get the Facts First
A 900 service number is a long-distance telephone number
that can connect you to a world of information. (“900”
takes the place of an area code.)
Calling a 900 Number Is Not Free
A charge will show up on your phone bill. It may be much
higher than the cost of other long-distance calls.
NOTE: There is also a charge for calls to 700, 976, 540,(and to
some 800 numbers after a minimum of free time is used). 700 numbers
are designed for conference calls, business consultations, some
teen “talk lines,” etc.
Know the Cost
Study ads and commercials for 900 numbers carefully. Listen
closely to any price information given at the start of a 900 number
message. Be sure you understand:
1. how the fee is set-by the minute, or per call?
2. how long the message lasts, if you’re charged by the minute.
Many 900 Numbers Provide Useful Services
or entertainment for a fee. (The business that provides the
service sets the fee, not your local telephone company.) Some of
these services require the use of a touch tone telephone.
Know Exactly What You Will Get in Return
Think twice before calling about: “free gifts”
- the cost of the call may be more than they’re worth; contests
that you’ve “won” - but never entered; “easy”
credit - a promised loan or charge card may never arrive; or employment
listings - they may just be obtained from your local paper.
Consider “900 Call Block”
If 900 calls create a problem for your family, consider 900
Call Block. This FREE service prevents 900 calls from being direct-dialed
from your home. 900 call block may not be available in all situations,
but will be provided where it is available.
NOTE: 900 calls charged to a calling card cannot be blocked by your
local telephone company.
Keep Track of 900 Calls
Consider keeping a log book
Use it to record:
1. who made the call
2. date and time including duration of call
3. the 900 number called
4. the name and address of the service provider
5. how much the call cost per minute (or the flat rate)
6. any products or services to be received in return for the call.
Check your phone bill each month
Compare the 900 charges with the information in your log book.
If you suspect an error in billing,
or have another problem with the 900 service, contact your local
telephone company. The telephone company usually will not disrupt
basic telephone service for disputed 900 charges.
